Martin Luther King, Jr.
America is far from a perfect country. The history that set the foundation of this nation is on one hand its greatest challenge to overcome, and on the other, an endless fuel for change.
America has as a result, produced great minds—timeless leaders who add to the definition of America and who we are as Americans beyond the elected individuals in office at any given time. I am proud to be a citizen of a country that gave us the late Martin Luther King, Jr.—a genius who understood the human condition as Einstein did physics. His words are as relevant today as they were in the late 1960’s. Such as, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.”
Today is Dr. King’s birthday—our day to formally recognize, remember and reflect on what he gave us as Americans. He has given me the courage to believe that each of us has the potential to improve the human condition, every day if we chose to.
May sharing his eloquent words inspire us to continue taking a stand in the name of justice, doing what is right, not necessarily popular. May his words remind us that we all define America, not just those who happen to have the bullhorn. May his wisdom encourage us all—whatever our way is—to give a voice to those who are not heard or seen. May he encourage us to keep defining America as who we are, not as how others see us.
